What makes a good leader?
A good leader is someone who knows what they are talking about, puts the work in, who listens, who thinks that everything is political and who lives their principles. And puts their neck on the line, isn't afraid of being unpopular and who doesn't want to be everyone's friend because they understand that it's not possible. Che Guevara, because he was a beautiful dreamer and Sylvia Pankhurst because she fought for working class women. They both gave up privilege to enable others.
Is leadership different for disabled people?
My overriding ambition is to scoop up all disabled people in a big net and work on them until they understand that they are valuable, unique and relevant in the world. When a 23 year old spinally injured young man chooses death over a life with impairment I know that our disabled leadership is central to forging an identity that is powerful and indestructible.
Do disabled people experience barriers to leadership that non disabled people don't experience?
Of course. The world is full of crap for everyone. And we get sub-crap.
Uh-oh...ten words over. It could have been worse...
