InSync goes live...

Diversity should be about opening up and expanding our thinking, with everyone benefiting from different perspectives and alternative points of view. That’s why this week Sync - a leadership development programme funded by Arts Council England – is expanding its membership to everyone interested in leadership and diversity through a strand called InSync.

So why open up the programme now? Jo Verrent, co-founder of Sync explains: “We’ve had a phenomenal response to Sync over the years, and have content from people as diverse as Michael Lynch (former CEO of Southbank through to Baroness Lockwood, first chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission. We have articles, videos and case studies of artists like Bobby Baker, Liz Carr, Tanya Raabe, and Simon McKeown and leaders like Jenny Sealey (Graeae), Maria Oshodi (Extant) and Tony Heaton (Shape). It suddenly occurred to us that by only promoting this content to other disabled people, we were hiding great stories, examples and illustrations of diversity in action – content that could be used to inform and inspire everyone”.

Sync has been running since 2008, focusing on the interplay between leadership and disability and now anyone can join to gain a monthly bulletin linking to new materials and current initiatives simply by signing up on the Sync site at www.syncleadership.co.uk

The Sync site as over 200 articles, case studies and think pieces featuring inspiring role models, aspects of leadership learning and fresh creative thinking. As this could be overwhelming, the team at Sync has set up a 21-day introduction to Sync - a series of 21 mini-emails each exploring an aspect of Sync and linking to handpicked key resources on the site.

“It’s simple and quick,” explains Sarah Pickthall, co-founder of Sync. “In around one minute a day, for 21 days, people can find out more about Sync and be sign posted to some of our key resources. We hope that people will both find useful information on the site and also return the favour – letting us know about compelling examples of practice that we can feature, creating a virtuous learning circle.”

And again, it is her personal experience of disability that has shaped this process that acts positively to create a catalyst for others – giving them both the space and the framework in which to respond. For Susan, the experience of disability simply isn’t negative. She has come to realise:

“that having limited mental and physical energy to act in the world needn't exclude one from meaningful leadership roles; and that, in fact, the experience gained through 'difference' can be a very positive asset”.

Sync Intensives - review by Lynn Cox

Whilst desperately looking for the professional development that would take my career to the next stage, I came across Sync Intensive 2011! Would the programme enable me to reconcile my disability, and notions about my disability, with my desire to become a leader in the creative sector? No other development scheme had come anywhere near answering this question. Would Sync Intensives 2011 be the one?

Since early 2009 I’d been concentrating on increasing my own leadership skills to deliver projects for myself and others. During this time, I embraced many valuable opportunities including the Clore Short Course and various Cultural Leadership Programme events.

However by June 2011 I knew that I had omitted one important area of development, namely ‘How do I operate as a visually impaired person working in the creative industries and be taken seriously’. For me this included issues about how people ‘see’ me, how much does the guide dog affect people’s behaviour towards me and how I know when I’m using the disability as an excuse/cop out for not getting down to something I should be doing.

Fortunately, Sync Intensive 2011 was then advertised and I spent the next month, on and off, thinking about and completing the application. I immediately recognised that the structure of the programme and the people delivering the content (Jo Verrent and Sarah Pickthall) were exceptional. So with baited breath I awaited to hear whether I was successful!

Once I had obtained one of the ten places, I wondered whether I was unrealistically hoping for the programme to be ‘a magic bullet’! Would it live up to my expectations?

The answer was ‘Yes, better than I could have hoped for, also being slightly different from what I had envisaged’. I expected the ‘Disability’ to be tackled very head on. However, the programme has been far more subtle and effective than that approach.

The two days, just over a month apart, when we all met up in London were not simply fabulous networking opportunities, but provided precious time to work on our internal energy and drivers (session one) contrasting with our external influence and social networking potential (session two). These sessions together with the three one-to-one coaching sessions and the opportunity to write an article about our practice, has given me confidence to endeavour to fulfil my creative goals, rather than hide away behind the disability and wait for something to happen.

Sync is currently under review for future funding from ACE, so the question needs to be asked ‘Whether Sync should continue and in what form?’.

Personally, I believe that it is essential that we offer inclusive programmes run by disabled leaders that can assist everyone to reach their potential. Disabled leaders often think that they have little to offer the mainstream/inclusive world. Thankfully Jo Verrent and Sarah Pickthall recognise that the inclusive approach to professional development is the only realistic way forward in the 21st Century.

An updated overview of leadership learning in the cultural sector has just been added to the CLP legacy site. Written by Sue Kay, it concludes the CLP evaluation, highlighting lessons learnt from the experience and delivery of the programme by the team, programme partners and the wider sector, placing it within the broader leadership and leadership development context.

Well worth a read to get a sense of the diversity and impact of the full range of CLP programmes.

Give it up for Up-Stream!

South East Disabled and Deaf artists take centre stage in the build up to London 2012

Disabled and Deaf artists have been selected to present their work at a high profile showcase programme as part of the Brighton Festival.

Eleven artists have been chosen to represent some of the best quality work being undertaken by disabled and Deaf artists in the South East as part of Up-Stream a major new showcasing programme being run by the arts organisation, Dada-South in partnership with Arts Council England.

Amongst the artworks being presented will be new work by dance company Deaf Men Dancing and a series of works by outsider artist / writer Colin Hambrook, who combines poetry and drawing to make edgy, delicate, artworks for his latest project 100 Houses.

Other artists presenting their work include Jon Adams, Noemi Lakmaier, the Oska Bright Film Festival (the world’s first film festival run by learning disabled practitioners), Project Art Works in Hastings, Freewheelers Theatre Company, Sally Booth, Juan DelGado, Gary Thomas and filmmaker Charlie Swinbourne.

This work will form part of this year’s Brighton Festival and will contribute to the Cultural Olympiad and the build up to London 2012.

Stevie Rice, Director of Dada-South said “This is a fabulous opportunity for us to present some of the best, innovative and exciting works of art by South East disabled and Deaf artists within a major event such as Brighton Festival. This programme of contemporary and progressive work will demonstrate the enormous creative talent that the region’s disabled and Deaf artists have and how essential it is that disabled and Deaf people play a critical role in events building up to and surrounding London 2012. Up-Stream will be a benchmark to excellence in programming great work made by disabled people and will show that the South East is the lead region for disabled people’s cultural activity.”

Up-Stream is part of Accentuate, a transformational programme of 15 projects which seeks to change perceptions and offer opportunities to showcase the talents of deaf and disabled people. Inspired by the South East’s proud heritage of Stoke Mandeville as the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement. Accentuate has 1000 days to create a cultural shift. Screen South is the home of Accentuate.

Extend – BBC Disability Scheme

Exclusively for disabled people, Extend is an award-winning, BBC-wide work placement scheme which offers appropriately experienced and/or qualified people a great opportunity to gain six months’ paid work experience within the BBC. Although the scheme doesn’t necessarily lead to a full-time job, last year 70% gained further work at the BBC.

From September 2011, 21 placements will be available across the UK, in both programming areas and programme support areas. You’ll need to match the criteria for the placement as well as demonstrate a keen interest in broadcasting and knowledge of BBC output.

Applications to be received by 3 May. Interviews are expected to be held between 23 May and 1 July.

Fellowships on the Clore Leadership Programme

The Clore Leadership Programme is currently inviting applications from exceptional individuals with the potential to take on significant leadership roles within culture.

Sponsored by the Cultural Leadership Programme, these Fellowships are open to candidates with at least 5 years' paid work experience either in employment, self-employed or freelance, usually in the cultural sector. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and passion for culture.

The Fellowship Programme aims to shape emerging creative leaders through in-depth learning, tailored as far as possible to the needs, aspirations and circumstances of about 20 individuals a year. Fellows also benefit from unparalleled access to senior cultural leaders and to extensive networks.

The structure of the programme includes: residential courses an extended placement for a period of approximately 3 months individually-selected training, mentoring and coaching. Fellows can choose to take a period of six months away from work and receive a bursary while doing their programme, or continue to be attached to their place of work, with their employer being compensated for the sustained periods when they're away.

We welcome applications for general Fellowships from people working across a wide range of creative and cultural activity, and also from those from outside the cultural sector who want to develop as a leader within it. In addition, we also offer some Fellowships focused on particular specialisms or geographical areas. These vary from year to year and can be found on our website.

Sync Thinking...

One of the main functions of Sync is to energise, inform and ultimately change generic leadership development - making it more open, accessible, relevant and applicable to all. Hence Sync Thinking…

Sync are hosting a small event on 8th March, at the Wellcome Centre in London to look at the impact of disabled leaders and the programme itself. Rather than offering an opportunity to hear from a series of inspiring disabled leaders about their journeys, Sync have instead curated some snapshots – disabled leaders and those they work with, inspire, and work in partnerships with. In this way, they aim to look at the impact of the work of the last few years – what has been noticed, what has altered and where is change still needed? Speakers include:

  • Caroline Cardus (visual artist who recently gained a residency at the Baltic through Shape’s Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary),

  • Rachel Gadsden (the first artist in Residence for Parlimentary Outreach, who recently gained a Without Walls Commission for a new outdoor performance),

  • Simon McKeown (DADAFest’s artist of the year 2010 whose digital art piece Motion Disabled was shown in 17 countries simultaneously on Dec 3rd 2010),

  • Jenny Sealey MBE, Artistic Director of Graeae and her protégée Rachel Bagshaw who is now directing at the Young Vic,

  • Mark Barbar, learning disabled dancer and employee of Anjali Dance

  • Stephanie Fuller, Head of Development, Arts Council England, South East,

  • Deepa Shastri, who has undertaken a Leading in London Placement at LOCOG/Shape and also works for STAGETEXT,

  • and Jon Adams, Artist in Residence at University of Portsmouth and currently involved in a number of projects linked to the Cultural Olympiad in the South East, including encouraging large numbers of people to create forests of flags from books.

In the whole history of Improbable's annual Open Space event Devoted & Disgruntled there has never seemed a more urgent and pressing need for this invitation to go out.

The fallout from the funding cuts may not only lead to the obvious loss of artistic work but just as important to the loss of livelihoods, hope and energy for people new and old to the performance world.

There is a possibility, as the story unravels, of us experiencing a sector that is divided and in conflict with itself. Don't miss this important event.

Making Waves: gesture-based communications system

Communication is very important; for most people effective communication is a learned skill, but communication is also a basic human right.

Learners with disabilities may lack independence due to an inability to communicate by speech or due to a lack of motor control. If gestures could be easily learned, recognised and converted to digital data, a whole new world of opportunity would be opened to them. Gestures need not only be converted to text or audio output to be helpful to learners, they could also be converted to electronic command signals so that those with limited motor control can gain greater independence.

This SBRI competition aims to develop technologies which will ensure that learners with communication difficulties can:

  • function effectively and independently across the range of learning and living situations;
  • communicate needs / desires / feelings to other people without the need for an intermediary support worker - therefore without the need of another individual to support them; and,
  • evolve their communication skills, building up their vocabulary (in terms of translatable gestures) in response to changing life contexts or changes in physical mobility.

European Year of Volunteering 2011 grants

Grants of up to 37,000 GBP are available to civil society organisations supporting the priorities of the European Year of Volunteering 2011.

The purpose of this dedicated year is to support member states and their voluntary sector organisations and to facilitate the development of volunteering across England. The Office for Civil Society (OCS) has identified four national priorities relevant to the Big Society ideals and is seeking organisations to deliver initiatives supporting these priorities. Grants will be made available to five organisations, or consortia of organisations to deliver projects addressing five themes, each with a focus on two specific months. A further grant will be made available to one organisation to diffuse the learning which will emerge from the supported activities.

Social enterprises - apply now!

Social Business Trust offers 10 million GBP in cash to encourage social enterprise

The Social Business Trust launched in December as a partnership of six organisations - Bain & Company, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, Ernst & Young, Permira and Thomson Reuters - with the aim of encouraging the growth of social enterprises.

Over the next two years, SBT is looking to support 20 strong, sustainable social enterprises in the UK who want to scale up their organisations. The goal of the project is to enable these social enterprises to meet the needs of one million additional people in the UK through the injection of 10 million GBP in cash and in kind from the founding partners to support the selected enterprises.

Being Me Being

Being Me Being is a project run by Sarah Scott, one of the individuals in our sister programme - Sync South East.

Fusing disability and yoga with the visual arts, its an exciting exploration - do you want to be part of the journey?

Being Me Being is inviting those with hidden impairments or long term conditions to participate. Newcomers to yoga and the visual arts are just as welcome as those with some considerable experience. There is an introductory event 11-5 on Sept 11th - 13th at Kent University Campus (completing on a beach near Folkestone). Participants will then be encouraged to continue their explorative journey for a period of time with remote guidance and support.

Leadership Unleashed

Following the highly successful roll out of Leadership Unleashed last year, People Create are delighted to open thier doors to applications for a new cohort starting in September 2010.

Leadership Unleashed is a unique leadership development programme that brings together 75 participants come from a wide range of backgrounds: 53 places have been reserved for participants from the arts, museums, libraries and creative industries. The remaining 22 places will be taken by individuals from a wide range of commercial organisations. Last year, these included Nokia, the Co-operative Group, Danone Waters and HML.

They are seeking participants with a diverse range of experiences and ideas about leadership; they will all have some experience of leading teams or organisations and will clearly be looking to create a unique leadership profile and network for themselves. Leadership Unleashed builds on four key themes that they have identified in modern leadership: curiosity, passion, insight and courage. The four day workshops are demanding, creative and action-based with plenty of opportunities for participants to work collaboratively in real situations. Each workshop is expertly facilitated throughout and participants can book their preferred module dates across the programme which will run until March 2011.

RADAR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

Are you someone who likes taking initiative and longs to change the world around you? Do you want to influence public life in the UK? Would you like to be a school Governor, part of a community forum, a tenants association, a Non-Departmental Public Body?, a disability organisation?

RADAR is interested in equipping people living with Ill health, Injury or Disability (IID) to be leaders and influencers in public life, and to take up leadership positions in the public, private and third (voluntary) sectors. RADAR won funding in 2009 to deliver a series of leadership events for disabled people, following on from our work with Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC). A series of four Leadership Development Days are scheduled to run between September and December 2010, offering a blend of skills training and personal development work. In total there will be 100 places available, with 40 of these made up from the cited underrepresented groups. Successful applicants will attend all four events and it is an excellent opportunity to develop your full leadership potential and realise your dreams.

The Leadership Development Days will equip you with many of the key skills that are crucial to being a leader and influencer. We are currently developing the programme, which is likely to include sessions on: Understanding your strengths and personality and making them work for you, identifying leadership opportunities, maximising your leadership experience, case studies, what makes a successful leader, successful networking, personal presentation, interview techniques, CV writing and job application, making the most of mentoring, one-to-one coaching on your personal priorities.

There will be inspirational speakers, professional coaches, diversity employment consultants and plenty of tips and advice from other disabled people who have experience in leadership and influential positions. The aim is to help you create your own self-sustaining networks and plans, so that you can start to achieve your leadership aspirations. We also work closely with diversity recruitment agencies, enabling delegates to have early access to leadership opportunities as they emerge. All four events will take place at: BVSC – The Centre for Voluntary Action, 138 Digbeth, Birmingham, B5 6DR.

The events will take place on: Tuesday 14th September 2010, Monday 18th October 2010, Wednesday 24th November 2010, Monday 13th December 2010.

Participation in the leadership events is free for delegates. However, you will need to meet your own travel costs. If you are offered a place and then do not attend at short notice, without advising us why, we reserve the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £25, as the place could have been used for someone else.

A small bursary will be available for those who experience genuine hardship and for whom the costs would otherwise be prohibitive. BBC ManageAble – New Disability Scheme

ManageAble is a new scheme aimed at increasing the number of disabled managers in the BBC. From November 2010, eight placements across journalism, finance, technology, project and business management will begin in four BBC locations. Just like our award-winning Extend scheme, this opportunity is exclusive to disabled people.

You’ll need to match the criteria for the placement as well as demonstrate a keen interest in broadcasting and knowledge of BBC output. You’ll gain training and development with the aim to increase the progression into jobs following the placement.

There are a variety of roles with differing responsibilities and salaries will reflect this.

NEW MUSIC TO FEATURE IN UK-WIDE CELEBRATIONS OF LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMES

PRS for Music Foundation launches New Music 20x12 as part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad - Composers, ensembles, festivals and music organisations are invited to submit ideas

PRS for Music Foundation has launched an exciting new programme to put new music centre-stage of the Cultural Olympiad in 2012. The brainchild of private patrons, David Cohen and Jillian Barker, New Music 20x12 will support 20 new works each lasting 12 minutes. It will be delivered by the PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the BBC, LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) and Sound and Music.

The call for proposals invites music organisations, festivals, ensembles, promoters or venues from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to present ideas for new work , in any musical genre, that they would like to commission from a UK- based composer. Each work will premiere in 2012 and receive at least 2 additional performances. The works will enable audiences across the UK to enjoy exceptional new music inspired by this once-in-a-lifetime celebration of our culture with the world.

A panel of experts, chaired by Roger Wright, Controller BBC Radio 3 and Director, BBC Proms, will be announced later this year and will select the best 20 works following the deadline for applications on Friday 1st October 2010. All selected works will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and some may be considered for inclusion in other official events relating to London 2012. In addition to financial support for the commissions, New Music 20x12 will include networking and professional development opportunities for the selected composers and musicians.

Roger Wright, Controller of BBC Radio 3, Director of the BBC Proms and Chair of the judges, said:

“The BBC is proud to be a key partner in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Projects such as New Music 20x12 will showcase the exceptional talent and creativity of the UK’s musical community, and we’re delighted to be able to support them on BBC Radio 3.”

Arts Management Placement Programme – Yorkshire region

If you can answer yes to the questions above, there is a new placement programme that might be just what you are looking for to kick start your career in the dance, literature or music sector.

We are currently recruiting for five paid and supported work placements at Ilkley Literature Festival, Yorkshire Dance Centre, Opera North, Peepal Tree Press or Balbir Singh Dance Company.

The placements will be for 6 months full time or approximately 9 months full time and provide you with 1-1 and small group support, as well as support for the host organisations. Each placement will be funded by a grant of up to £9,500.

Who is on Sync Intensives?

We are delighted to announce the 15 people who will be taking up places on our Sync Intensives programme this year – a truly diverse group that we can’t wait to start working with (it was supposed to be 12, but the quality of the candidates was so high, we’ve had to raise it to include 3 more!)

As with Sync 20, our group includes individual artist practioners, and those working within disability specific and mainstream arts and cultural organisations.

From within arts organisations, we have Laura Cream, Programme Manager at Shape, Rachel Bagshaw, Training and Learning Projects Manager at Graeae and Sue Williams, Senior Strategy Officer, Diversity (Disability)
Arts Council England.

Within other sectors we have Rachael Wallach, Service Development Officer, Library and Information Service within the London Borough of Lewisham, Patricia Collins, museum curator and Faye Stewart, Project Co-ordinator, SCA Enterprise Office, University of the West of England, Bristol.

We have a storyteller – Robin Meader, Artistic Director of Open Storytellers, a group of Storytellers with learning disabilities from Somerset; a musician - Jez Colbourne, aka JC Jamma, a former winner of the European Song Contest for Disabled Artists and one of the only learning disabled performers to take his one man show on an international tour with Mind the Gap; and a dancer and choreographer - Michael Mitchell, Artistic Director of Dance Aware.

We have two film makers – Liz Crow, recently spotted wearing a Nazi uniform on top of the fourth Plinth in Trafaglar Square as part of Gormley’s One & Other project, and Caglar Kimyoncu, film maker and founding director of Filmpro. We have Simon McKeown, creator of both the digital artwork Motion Disabled and the digitally animated bats on Coronation Street amongst other things, Susan Austin, whose work, including 'Submerged, I Stand Proud' (which is an image of the artist in her wheelchair underwater, has been shown at Holton Lee and in other galleries.

When she heard she had gained a place on the Intensives programme, Susan said:

"I feel very excited and honoured to be part of this years Sync Intensives. Following on from attending the Leaders into Leading Workshop, meeting such a diverse range of interesting and exciting people and having my ideas about leadership completely transformed, I can't wait to start engaging in the Sync process, working with a coach and meeting the other people who will be accompanying me on this journey. I feel that attending the training day and now becoming part of the Intensives progamme has been the start of a complete paradigm shift. It seems like it will enable me to engage with 'The Arts' from a completely new and empowered perspective, rooted in valuing the unique expertise we can all bring.”

Our final two ‘intensives’ join the programme as part of their success in gaining placement opportunities through CLP. Deepa Shastri, formerly Audience Liaison Officer at StageText, will be taking up her placement with Unlimited, with London 2012 and Theresa de Swiet will be taking up her placement with Whitechapel Gallery in London as part of the CLP/ACE Leading in London opportunities.

Each person on the intensives programme will have an opportunity to create an article for the Sync website and add their case study to our growing resource. We can’t wait to get started and luckily we don’t have long before our first session is planned – at the end of April in Bristol.

Embrace Arts, University of Leicester requires a freelance consultant to lead and manage its learning and events programmes whilst the Director is on maternity leave.

Embrace Arts has recently launched a new identity that reflects the breadth of its purpose and aims as the University of Leicester’s arts centre to be creative, inclusive, vibrant and welcoming. With our 180 seater hall, three studios, extensive exhibition gallery and bright foyer spaces, we are still one of the only arts centres in the UK that can boast a fully-accessible facility. Our commitment to offer opportunities without barriers in ways that challenge and inspire is clearly stated in our strapline “open to all”.

We continue to be very proud of our association with Lord Attenborough and all that has been achieved since the centre opened in 1997.

Vision To be a nationally recognised regional centre of excellence for arts and inclusion

Funding Embrace Arts is funded annually by the University of Leicester and is in receipt of project funding from Arts Council England, Leicester City Council and Trusts and Foundations.

Learning Embrace Arts has an annual Creative learning programme of accredited and non-accredited 10 week courses across visual arts, music and dance. It is also developing a programme of shorter courses and workshops.

Events From September 2010 it is planned to anchor our other events programming around 3 festival points: Black History season (October), Leicester Comedy festival (February) and Spark Children’s Festival (May/June). Events programmed during these periods will be disability focused.

There is a year-round music programme which consists of a classical music series, professional jazz series, “Introducing” and Arts Bar music – these are programmed by the Music Manager. There is a series of 5 exhibitions per year with associated education and project work. We are currently extending our remit to other venues across campus.

Projects Embrace Arts is starting to develop its disability-focused projects to enable high quality work involving its local and regional communities. This often takes the form of outreach activity.

Skills/experience needed:

• Excellent leadership, communication and people management skills • Ability to programme disability-focused events and events • Financial management and ability to work within a tight budget • Experience of managing a small-scale venue • Understanding of marketing campaigns/strategies • Ability to build partnerships both within the university and externally • Track record of successful fundraising • Knowledge of local/regional arts context

The successful applicant will report to Jackie Dunne, Director: Institute of Lifelong Learning.

Extend BBC Disability Scheme

A UK wide opportunity exclusively for disabled people, Extend is an award-winning, BBC wide work placement scheme which offers appropriately experienced and/or qualified people a great opportunity to gain six months paid work experience within the BBC.

Although the scheme doesn't necessarily lead to a full time job, last year more than half its intake gained further work at the BBC.

From Sept 2010, over 20 placements will be available across the UK, in both programming areas and programming support areas. You'll need to match the criteria for the placement as well as demonstrate a keen interest in broadcasting and knowledge of BBC output.

International film making apprenticeship

Anyone interested in an all expenses paid apprenticeship program that will be held this year at the SILVERDOCS International Documentary Film Festival, the largest event of its kind co-hosted by AFI (the American Film Institute) and the Discovery Channel?

This program was created for emerging and aspiring filmmakers with disabilities in partnership with VSA Arts, the disability outreach program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, DC. Participants are provided with travel, room, board and VIP registration for the entire festival and conference and gain entry to workshops and parties attended by industry leaders, filmmakers, distributors and more.

EXTENDED CHANCE TO Lead in London: Sync Associates

Due to a range of factors (Christmas, snow, loads of other opportunities being around) the deadlines for the Leading in London placements for disabled people are being extended.

This is a real opportunity for you to experience leading in major London venues and with nationally recognised leaders - please help us spread the word.

The opportunities are aimed at emerging and mid-career Deaf and disabled leaders who want to develop their leadership skills and behaviours in a work environment through shadowing a leader and undertaking key projects with guidance and support. The objective is to 'learn through doing' and the expectation is that the transition from shadowing to delivering will be a quick one. It is intended that placements should be intensive and transformative leadership development.

Placements are facilitated by the Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP), funded by Arts Council England - London via CLP and supported by CLP's programme strand Sync.

There is one placement now available for Deaf and disabled leaders up to three months full-time or up to six months part-time at Whitechapel Gallery.

In addition there is the opportunity for a Deaf and disabled leader to undertake a six month placement as an Associate Producer with London 2012's Unlimited Programme.

SYNC Intensives

Last year, we ran a programme called Sync 20.

I found Sync 20 an incredibly useful experience for a number of reasons, but predominantly it was a great networking opportunity to build working relationships with my peers, and I found the coaching invaluable, giving me real tactics to work with to consolidate my own professional approach and ultimately developing a much more “confident” me. Sync Intensives is the new name for this programme, starting again soon, Its is a bespoke programme for 12 disabled people designed take the Sync thinking and learning deeper. It will pair leadership learning and one-to-one coaching:

  • The 12 members will be given access to leadership training, including two full days of face-to-face development work as a group

  • Each of the 12 will be offered personal coaching (with options ranging from face to face, by telephone or by email or msn)

Sync 20 was not only a privilege to belong to it also gave me fantastic practical and creative support through a Capital project and time of change. (Jenny Sealey, Graeae)

Sync Intensives is based on last year’s Sync 20 programme and as before, we are not finalise the exact format of it until we know who is going to be involved. This is because we believe that to provide suitable access for people you need to know their needs right from the start and then build from that.

Sync 20 was a good, supportive kick up the 'proverbial'! (Jo Paul, Scenographer)

However we do know that it is likely that individuals will need to attend two days training and undertake work from home (approximately 30 hours over the 9 months of the programme). We will also expect Sync Intensive members to keep a learning diary or record in some form, reflecting on their journey and to ‘guest edit’ an edition of the Sync ebulletin one month. The Sync Intensive process will be documented and information passed on to members of Sync and beyond. The coaching element for Sync Intensives will be delivered through a mixture of face-to-face, telephone and on-line methods.

Coaching makes you feel like it’s ok to wear your jumper on inside out and not apologise. It is a bit like a wash on the delicate fabrics programme with the full spin on. Every session was like this but I noticed I became more tuned in with assessing issues and understanding them… (Jenny Sealey, Artistic Director, Graeae Theatre Company)

Sync Intensives will run from March 2010 to October 2010, and is open to all members of Sync who live in the UK.

Sync 20 helped me identify what kind of leadership role would be right for me, and enabled me to focus on how I could make that happen. (Caroline Cardus, artist)

Sync Intensives selection

The aim is to create a diverse group of disabled people for Sync Intensives, with people from different backgrounds working in different fields, with different levels of experience and with different perspectives on disability and leadership. Applications can be made by email, post, or by telephone (if these are not accessible to you, let us know and we’ll see what we can do).

These will be considered by the Sync team who will be looking for individuals who have the capacity to make the most of the Sync Intensive process and have the potential to make an impact in the fields in which they operate. Selecting this group is bound to be, to an extent, subjective and feedback will be available to unsuccessful applicants.

All applications must be received by 5.00pm, Sunday 28th February 2010.

Just a reminder that we are having a relaxed, informal session in London next tuesday evening (12th) from 6-8pm at Graeae's lovely new building.

We know that remote computer access isn't right for everyone so want to provide an opportunity for people to ask questions face to face - whether you are involved in Sync already or not.

Its also a chance to find out more about the range of opportunities currently available through Sync - the Intensives programme and the Leading in London and Unlimited placements.

Leading in London placements are aimed at emerging and mid-career Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) (1.) or Deaf and disabled leaders who want to develop their leadership skills and behaviours in a work environment through shadowing a leader and undertaking key projects with guidance and support. The Young Vic is offering a six month residency for a disabled director to develop their understanding of the craft of directing and the role of an artistic director. The residency would be tailored to the recipient’s interests and ambitions.

The opportunity is aimed at disabled artists who have demonstrated a talent and commitment to directing but have had limited opportunity to work in a middle scale producing theatre.

The mentor-mentee relationship is confidential, providing one-to-one mentoring, giving support to the participants, and offering career advice. Both mentees and mentors get valuable experience from the project and gain inspiration from sharing knowledge and expertise.

Sync into Manchester

We've just pinned down the date and venue for the nest Leads into Leading session - this time in Manchester in partnership with Full Circle Arts.

Its at The Greenroom in Manchester on Wednesday 3rd February, 1 - 4.30pm. It’s a chance to find out more about leadership theories from a disability perspective, and its open to all disabled people working or wanting to work in the arts. Places are free, but limited to 15 disabled people only so please book ASAP by emailing joverrent@adainc.org

Access support will be provided. The Greenroom offers wheelchair access, and an induction loop. BSL interpreters and palantypists will be booked and held until mid Jan so please do let us know when booking if this support is required.

Calling the dance?

Leading comes in all forms. What about leading dances?

We were asked if we could pass on the following call: COULD YOU BE A SQUARE DANCE CALLER?

Training is available at five-day residential caller schools, followed up by two years of support from a mentor. Scholarships to caller school are currently being offered to anyone who is willing to set up a club upon qualifying and teach beginners to Mainstream level. To be eligible to apply for the training, you must be thoroughly familiar with the modern square dance syllabus to at least Mainstream level and it would help if you are keen to recruit and teach younger people. They are really keen to ensure that disabled people are not exclude from dancing or calling so if you've always secretly fancied giving it a go - now is the time!

Our View positions advertised

Our View is a steering group that will sit at the heart of Accentuate, the 2012 Legacy project for the South East of England. Led by Screen South, Accentuate is inspired by the Paralympic movement and aims to create a cultural shift in 1000 days by celebrating talent and recognising achievement. The Our View group will ensure that the views and contributions of disabled people inform every level of the programme.

They are seeking a Project Manager who is highly skilled in supporting disabled people to coordinate the activities and information flow across “Our View”, as well as five Core Advisory Members to act as expert and inspiring advocates for the group and programme. The ideal people will be committed to achieving this shift by working with disabled people within the cultural and sports sectors.

The Project Manager position is freelance, 1 day per week, £250 per day (including expenses) to October 2012. The closing date for applications is 12noon, on 8 January 2010 and interviews will be held in Folkestone w/c 11 January 2010.

The Core Advisory Members of the Our View Group will have to commit to 12 days per year acting as expect advocates on behalf of the group, until October 2012, with a £2,500 annual stipend. Applications for Core Advisory Members will be considered from 8 January 2010 and close once all five posts have been filled.

BSLBT Zoom Short Film Scheme

The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust and Neath Films aim to create opportunities for up and coming Deaf filmmakers. After a period of tendering, proposals and fine-tuning, we are pleased to present to you the BSLBT Zoom Short Film Scheme. Zoom is an intensive scheme to support the production of 6 short films, shot digitally, by British Deaf filmmaking talent.

Arts Council England, London has been working with Improbable Theatre and Greenwich & Docklands festival to create 3 producing opportunities and they are just about to advertise these posts in the press.

The posts are for disabled and D/deaf practitioners who have at least three years experience of theatre or the arts.

The deadline for application will be 11th November 2009 and interviews will be on 23rd or 24th November at Arts Council London, 2 Pear Tree Court EC1R 0DS. Interpreters & access workers will be available (and they will let people know who they are if they are short-listed for interview).

Diversifying Outdoor Arts

Emergency Exit Arts has been funded by Arts Council England (London office) to provide opportunities for Deaf and disabled artists to consider expanding and exploring their creative practice in the outdoor arts sector.

They are holding an event to support people looking to do this on Tuesday 3rd November at Toynbee Studios, Commercial Street, London E1 6AB. (11am to 3.30pm approximately)

Deaf and disabled artists are invited to attend the event. It will provide artists with the opportunity to find out about work currently being created in the public realm and to assess the potential for developing their own practice within the outdoor arts sector.

Key speakers from a range of outdoor arts organisations, artists and independent producers will talk about their own work and opportunities for artists, followed by opportunities for questions and answers and discussion.

In the afternoon there will be break-out sessions for Deaf and disabled artists to network and talk to independent producers, regularly funded organisations and curators about project ideas, barriers to participation, creative practice and the practicalities of creating outdoor work. There are also opportunities for Deaf and disabled artists to have one to one advisory meetings with outdoor arts organisations / producers / curators (as appropriate), across all artforms. These sessions will enable artists to explore and develop a project concept from an initial idea, thinking about the environment, costing, partners / collaborators etc.

Emergency Exit Arts will cover access costs for these one to one sessions, which will be scheduled (depending on artist and producer / organisation availability) between January and March 2010.

What are you doing on 10th October?

The 10th October has been nominated as Common Purpose 360 Day - and there is an invitation for all to do one thing, big or small, to challenge the way you see the world...

The day is inspired by a quote from Einstein: “We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

The call is to get people to think differently - by getting a different perspective. Their website suggests you could: * ask 3 people who live outside your area what their impressions are of it * go to a meeting or an event that you, and others who know you, would consider it unlikely for you to attend * meet someone who is actively campaigning or fighting for a change in your business or community * take yourself out for a cup of coffee/tea, sit for five minutes and reflect on your personal brand

It could be something on your own, or with others; simple or involved; online or face-to-face; local or international; something that takes you to an unfamiliar environment; something you wouldn't normally do. It’s up to you.

See what you get out of the experience - it may be a new insight into your world, or a solution to a problem you face. You may find some help and expertise from someone, somewhere or something that you didn't expect.

Go Public

Dada-South and Artpoint are launching an exciting new opportunity for disabled and Deaf artists in the South East. This opportunity is open to artists at all stages in their career.

As part of the Accentuate programme, Go Public offers the opportunity for two or more disabled or Deaf artists to realise their work in the public realm.

This scheme will work with the chosen artists to develop their concepts and skills.

Go Public is open to disabled or Deaf artists, but we have a broad interpretation of disability and welcome applications from people who have impairments, people who feel disabled or have ongoing health conditions. We will also consider applications from other creative practices. Support will be provided for applicants to develop their applications and the chosen applicants will be given one to one support throughout the process.

Could you be an Artistic Assessor?

Arts Council England have just started their recruitment for the national artistic assessment scheme. Its a great opportunity to extend your influence and really make a difference. If you are interested in applying, information and an application form is on the Arts Council website at www.artscouncil.org.uk/assessment.

Assessors will be awarded a two-year contract for services, starting January 2010. They will write between 10 and 14 reports a year and attend two meetings at the Arts Council. They will be paid a flat fee of £1,000 a year, plus expenses.

The deadline for applications is 9 October.

It takes two...

Learning to dance the tango isn't as straight forward as it looks - its as much about learning to follow as it is about learning to lead. If you are leading, then the importance of having a clear sense of where you are heading and what you want to do next can't be overstated; if you are following, then the ability to follow activity, being ready to listen, being ready to truly follow and not pre-empt comes to the fore.

Its called a 'close embrace' dance. For some parts you lean in to your partner - if you are holding the position correctly they are bearing much of your weight. Learning to lead, learning to following and learning to allow others to carry weight - the tango is surely a lesson in leadership.
