Artistic Director - The Unusual Stage School
I believe that a good leader must possess a subtle balance comprising clarity and focus of vision with empathy and the ability to understand other people's points of view. A good leader knows when to lead from the front and when to sit back and facilitate a consensus of opinion.
Is leadership different for disabled people?
Having an impairment gives leaders positive qualities. It gives us practical skills in problem-solving, finding creative solutions and thinking round the corners. Overcoming barriers enables us to cut through the crap dished out by authority figures, bureaucrats and retro ivory-tower dwellers eager to maintain their historical position. It enables us to empathise with others across the breadth of society and understand underrepresented groups whether they face social, racial, economic or political barriers.
Do you think there are barriers to leadership for disabled people that non-disabled people don’t face?
The cultural and creative sector has only recently started to address the stereotyping and under-representation of disabled people. We must be represented at all levels to achieve equality.
