What makes a good leader?
I believe leadership can be distributed. Formally appointed 'Leaders' and ‘followers’ are in relation and are open to the potential of their own and others' contributions, and so anyone can be a good leader. A good leader for me is someone who is open and willing to step into a leadership role when required, regardless of formal role. A former manager embodied this approach for me.
Is leadership different for disabled people?
I believe we are contextually influenced, and so if we chose to value reflexivity, we have the potential to draw upon our experiences of impairment and disability to inform our approach.
Do you think there are barriers to leadership for disabled people that non-disabled people don’t face?
Normative standards, which value a very narrow view of acceptable behaviours and limit leadership to formal roles, which are based upon non-impairment and which lead to disability, create barriers for disabled people.
