What makes a good leader?
A good leader is someone of high emotional intelligence. They need self awareness, self regulation and self motivation along with integrity and fairness.
I think Tony Blair demonstrated good qualities of leadership. He was charismatic and persuaded others to follow him even when there was disagreement. He had a passion for putting his point across which was noticeable even to people who did not agree with him.
Is leadership different for disabled people?
Living with a disability can be compared to living in an abusive relationship. This is a disempowering experience. Good leaders need to be inspiring and empowering of others. Personal disability journeys therefore could contribute greatly to an individual becoming an empowering leader.
Do disabled people experience barriers to leadership that non disabled people don’t experience?
There are institutional and personal barriers. If a person needs to work part time their promotional prospects are more limited. I have experienced institutional hostility to undertaking more senior posts part time.
Personal barriers relate to self belief and come both as a result of institutional barriers and from an individual's handling of their disability
