What makes a good leader?
I consider myself excellent in finding suitable people who have the qualities that would produce the best results in the task alone rather than claiming that I would be able to do it all myself. While I have the confidence and embrace the stage in performing and presenting, I am able to declare that there are other qualities that I lack and rather than thinking I would be able to supplement them myself, I prefer to delegate and inspire other candidates who will in turn return the favours passing down the inspiration to other people.
Is leadership different for disabled people?
As a deaf person, I would imagine the access to information or communication would pose an issue but providing a sign language interpreter does not necessarily eliminate the issue as the qualities and performance of the interpreter himself would have a huge impact on the overall result. It would take a professionally trained interpreter with the correct terminologies, knowledge and a range of skills to meet the needs of the communication between me as the deaf person and the recipient as we would both rely on the interpreter to generate a meaningful dialogue.
Do disabled people experience barriers to leadership that non disabled people don’t experience?
For deaf people, access to information has proved to be the obstacle but this also extends to the cultural aspects experienced by the individual deaf person especially if he or she has undergone similar patterns in the path of life, growing up as a deaf person.
A lot of information exchange goes for granted hence the quote from Ben Steiner (RIP) who claimed that deaf people are amazing as they should, in theory, not be able to have acquired the intelligence and skills that they have.
